I have been making things (clothes, home decor, jewelry etc) since I was a kid, naturally this lead to a life in the fashion industry. I met Wendy at the Fashion Institute of Technology, as student there, she was a well loved mannequin seemingly at the end of her life, cast away to the freight elevator with a careless sign that said “throw away”. The thought of a perfectly good mannequin being buried in a landfill pulled my heartstrings and I ended up rescuing her from imminent death.
I don’t know where the name Wendy came from exactly; it just struck me one day and seemed fitting for a mannequin made in 1966. My trusty sewing companion and I have gone all over the place together: back and forth from Manhattan to Marysville, PA too many times to count, a move to Queens, and currently (hopefully permanently) to Hoboken, NJ. Without my trusty girl, creating new designs, working from my favorite patterns and refitting old favorites would be a daunting task.
When I came up with What’s Wendy Wearing! it was an idea seed really. At the time it seemed like it would be one of the ones that never really takes root; but as the idea marinated in my mind I realized what a fun adventure this would be.
As Wendy and I trot all over the city photographing her in my latest creations and at an equally inspiring location we hope that you too are inspired!
